From Worcester Magazine:

BROTHERS BREAK BARRIERS

Ilmar and Aldo López-Gavilán are musicians and brothers, born in Havana, Cuba. Separated by time, place, geography and political obstacles, they seldom have a chance to perform together. A rare chance to see them peform live is coming up, along with screening of a documentary about their lives, "Lost Hermanos/The Brothers," including an emotional reunion. At 14, Ilmar went to the Soviet Union, never living in Cuba again, and ultimately landing as a working chamber violinist in the U.S. Aldo flourished in Cuba, but has struggled due to U.S. sanctions. On Oct. 15, the film will be screened followed by a live, in-person recital by the brothers at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury. The event is presented by Music Worcester. (RD)”

Family Over Everything. See the heartwarming documentary about Cuba, music, and family that The New York Times calls “electrifying,” and the Latin Jazz Network describes as “a story that has to be told.” Los Hermanos/The Brothers follows virtuoso Afro-Cuban siblings Ilmar Gavilán and Aldo López-Gavilán as they reunite for a performance after years of being forced apart by the US-Cuba conflict. The film also features Grammy-winning musicians Joshua Bell and the Harlem Quartet. Back on PBS in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Streaming on PBS.org and broadcasting on local stations.
